Office changes
Ruttan Bates has recently said goodbye to our long time mentor and colleague John James who is no
longer practicing from our offices. This change has, however, led to the opportunity for us to open our space to another long time mentor and colleague John Kingman Phillips. John's reputation as a highly skilled and versatile litigator in criminal, civil and class action proceedings is second to none
and we are very pleased to have his presence around the office.
115 Alberta Court of Appeal Judgments - and counting
Ruttan Bates lawyers are up to 115 reported judgments in the Alberta Court of Appeal with additional
reserved decisions and pending hearings in 2019. As Calgary criminal lawyers our firm has become well
known and respected for our appeal work and we continue to build upon our reputation in Alberta's
highest court. Recently Jennifer Ruttan also brought a matter before the British Columbia Court of Appeal.
Ruttan Bates guest lecturers at the University of Calgary
Jennifer Ruttan and Michael Bates recently attended to teach advanced criminal law appellate advocacy as
guest lecturers at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Law. Michael Bates has also continued his long-
standing role in the university moot program as coach of the Calgary team in the Alberta Court of Appeal
moot competition.
